Why is it that the percentage of osteoporosis is higher in Americans while their calcium intake is greater compared with the Japanese?

Among various possible factors, the fact that the American people's intake of calcium is largely through dairy products is most like a major reason.

As is illustrated in the chart to the right, dairy products account for 76 % of the calcium source in the case of Americans. In contrast, in the case of the Japanese, 50% of our calcium intake comes from botanical sources such as algae, vegetables and grain, whereas dairy products account for only 24%.

Dairy products contain much fat and protein which suppress the absorption of calcium. In contrast, calcium taken from botanical sources such as algae, vegetables and grain is high in absorbability and in bioavailability.

Although the Japanese people's intake of calcium is less than that of the American people, the fact that fewer Japanese suffer from osteoporosis can be attributed to this type of high-quality calcium that the Japanese have always been in the habit of taking.
